Solids consist of atoms that are rigidly attached to one another. If you attempt to squeeze, distend, or shear a solid, it tries to return to its original shape elastically. (Elastic has a slightly different meaning in physics than it has in the real world. If something is deformed elastically, it comes back to its original shape when the force is removed. Rubber bands are not as good an example of an elastic material as are steel bars or a golf ball.)
