French team captain Didier Deschamps lifts the World Cup trophy high above his head after France's World Cup final win over Brazil July 12. Hosts France beat four-time World Cup champions Brazil 3-0 at the Stade de France.
Croatia's Davor Suker wins the arguably most prestigious of the FIFA awards, the Golden Shoe. He scored a goal in six of Croatia's seven matches, thus beating Gabriel Batistuta (ARG) and Christian Vieri (ITA) who scored five goals each. Only against Argentina, Suker who is on the books of Real Madrid failed to get his customary goal.
Fabien Barthez, the goalkeeper of the new World Champions, has been designated winner of the Lev Yashin Prize for the best goalkeeper of the 1998 World Cup. Barthez conceded only two goals in France's seven matches, an all-time record.
Post-Final Facts and Figures:
France has conceded only 2 goals in 7 matches played in this World Cup. This is the lowest number of goals conceded by the winners of the title. The previous record was 3 goals, shared by Uruguay (1930), Italy (1934), England (1966) and Brazil (1994). Only Brazil had played as many matches as France did in this edition.
France is the 7th team to win the FIFA World Cup. Brazil still remains the team with most wins (4), followed by Germany and Italy (3 each), Argentina and Uruguay (2 each), England and, as of today, France (1 each). This is only the 6th time that the host country has won the title: Uruguay in 1930, Italy in 1934, England in 1966, Germany in 1974 and Argentina in 1978 have achieved the same result that France got today. The French team has a record of 21 wins, 6 draws and 14 defeats in 41 matches played. With 48 points, France is in 6th position in the all-time ranking.
