Museo Capitolino, Italy, Roma; 1644-55; Girolamo Rainaldi
- The Museo Capitolino is a palazzo which
is faced to the Piazza del Campidoglio(below to the left of the
image).
The facade of the building was copied from the Pallazzo dei
Conservatori(1564-68) which facade was redesigned by Michelangelo
Buonarroti.
- The Piazza del Campidoglio, which was
planed by Michelangelo, has a axis from the approach to the Palazzo
del Senatore(1592-98). The Museo Capitolino was planed the opposite
side of the Pallazzo dei Conserbatori symmetrically, only for the
Piazza del Campidoglio but not for usage of the building. Both of the
Pallazzo dei Conserbatori and the Museo Capitolino has 80 degrees
angle with the Pallazzo del Senatore, therefore the plan of the piazza
is trapezoid and reverce perspective.
- The statue of Marcus Aurelius (the
pedestal was designed by Michelangelo) placed at the center of the
piazza, and the floor was paved with oval pattern.
- The Museo Capitolino has scaleouted
columns which is called "Giant Order". Giant Order columns
show as if the builing has two facade, one is two storied building,s
face and the other is scaleouted one story building's facade. The
manners of scaleout and overlap would become typical manners of the
Mannerism and Baroque style.
