1807 Downing College

In 1784 and 1804 James Wyatt submitted plans for the College. These were not in the Gotchic style, as the King had remarked against it. Unfortunately they fell victim nevertheless to stylistic fashion after Thomas Hope, a much respected amateur architect, criticised them fiercely for not being Greek enough.

Designs from several other architects were then considered. On the advice of a committe of three architects, the designs of Wilkins, a fellow of Caius who also designed the front of Kings College, were accepted. Building started in 1807.

Wilkins plan was in the neo-Grecian style, with giant Ionic orders. The North range, illustrated to the right was a 20th Century addition Although in many ways it is a departure from Wilkins intentions, it conveys superficially the feeling of the College architecture.
