Design Discussion

Even though roses are a favorite food of deer, many people long for roses in their garden. To help satisfy our customer’s desire for roses, we have designed a rose garden that surrounds the roses with plants that work as deer deterrents. The deer hate these plants so much, they frequently go out of their way to avoid them.
In addition, if you plant Rosa rugosa (rugosa rose, also called beach rose or plum rose) the deer will be less attracted to the roses.
Nevertheless, we strongly recommend that you use hot pepper wax and coyote urine as deterrents on the roses in this design. While the deer deterrent plants planted around the roses will help keep the deer away, roses are nevertheless a favorite food of deer. If hungry enough, they may very well still come after your roses.
