Otto Hahn (1879-1968) was successful in splitting the uranium atom, and anticipated the possible destructive use to which his discovery could be put, and would be; it eventually resulted in the construction of the atomic bomb. Hahn's assistant Fritz Strassmann is also mentioned on the middle stamp, although he did not share his 1944 Nobel prize in chemistry. |
