Apropo
Apropo" is the only anthology of satire and humour published in four languages Ц Bulgarian, Russian, English, and French. As a lot of political changes took place in Europe in the late 1980s Ц early 1990s the anthology was published not regularly and its life was short Ц from 1983 till 1991. Though there were only seven issues of "Apropo" it influenced the caricature art of many countries greatly. It occurred that humour could be translated into other languages. The caricatures by S. Steinberg, R. Topor, A. Chechot, M.Bartak, V. Rozantsev, M. Zlatkovski, V. Ungerer are funny and understandable in many countries; short stories and aphorisms of satirical writers try to solve a lot of everyday peopleТs problems.

The publishers of "Apropo" in Gabrovo have at their disposal a lot of libraries and collections of humorous and satirical drawings. The slogan of the anthology is УSmile!Ф The vicissitudes of life will be forgotten, and the smiles of Cunning Peter, Khodga Nasreddin, Lamme Hudsak, Ludash Mati, Til Ulenshpigel, Pantagruelle, Sweik, and O. Bender will live long. World humour should destroy the lack of laughter.Ф

The cover of the first issue of УApropoФ was illustrated by A. Born. Single drawings and series of caricatures by best artists (G.Mordilio, J.-P. Dekloso, A. Stok, A. Nekrasov, Kukriniksi, S. Despodov, I. Sliva, O. Raizinger, and others) are the most important part in the anthology. The symbolic drawing by I. Kopelnitski which presents a man standing on the globe and looking in the window opens the first issue of "Apropo". There is no violence in the caricatures of "Apropo", the pictures are philosophical and humorous. (LetТs remember the history of Bulgaria. It is situated on the way from Europe to Asia. The country exists for more than 1300 years because of its humour and smiles.

"Apropo" published articles on history and theory of caricature art, animated cartoons, painting, and sculpture (V. Propp "The problem of comism and laughter", R. Geibin "Humour as a metaphor, humour as rhetoric"), articles on national aspects in caricatures Ц Asian, African, and Latin American. (K. Atsev "Grotesque realism of the East"). The third issue in 1988 was devoted to the Balkan countries, the second issue in 1986 Ц to K. GashekТs centennial. There are articles about Ch. Chaplin, M. Twain, the writer R. Topor, the artist, S. Mrozhek, and B. Rassel.

"Apropo" announces that it does not pursue commercial objects. Its goal is to make the whole world smile.
