Caricatures of people of art
I've never thought that it is so funny just to look in the mirror." H. Heine.

A considered opinion is that distinguished people always have a sense of humour. But talented and famous persons did not like when someone ridiculed hem. Voltaire did not like when Denone drew him in a nightcap having breakfast in bed. But here the caricaturist just remembered Leonardo's saying "make the mirror your teacher".

O. Daumier did not follow any advice but became a famous caricaturist. He drew a lot of caricatures of political and art figures. A lot of people of art (writers, musicians, actors) were proud of these caricatures, they considered them an honour.

It is true that ugliness and unattractiveness are more typical than beauty; the real truth is in the rough and bitter picture of life but not in plain and clear reflection. (O. Rodin). Just remember mendacious featureless Nazi portraits. Dictators do not need caricature as it is truthful and honest, and laughter is dangerous.

Caricatures arouse interest in the works of artists, writers and actors. The series of caricatures by T. Kayan, "Who is Who" (Ch. Chaplin, L. Tolstoy, Z. Freud, Van Gogh, Morse), S. Despodov (M. Proust, F. Lorka, B. Pasternak, F. Durrenmatt, A. Chekhov), A. Gofmeister (F. Leger, Prevert), S. Ferentz (Toulouse-Lautrec,Z. Freud, etc.), D. Levain (A. Chekhov, E. Hemingway, F. Dostoevski) are very expressive.

P. Picasso was a great caricaturist, his cubist portraits are philosophical caricatures. The impressions of his paintings are vivid. Picasso's geometrical and angled faces are sometimes gruesome and unlovely, but Anton Chekhov said that a young beautiful woman looks like "a wrinkled animal". A great artist always bears the truth. Today we think of Louis-Philippe when we see a pear, upright moustache remind us off William II, a monkey - of Hoebbels or Ch. Darwin as many caricaturists drew Darwin as a monkey.
