Erotic caricatures of any nation
reflect its nature. "Sauna" and "love" Russian luboks depicted the laughing
world of ancient Russia, originated from ancient ceremonies and beliefs.
Those pictures are the first erotic caricatures. They obviously prove that
Russian folk humour is full of sensuality. Afanasyev's "Sacred Fairy Tales",
rural frivolous chastushkas and urban anecdotes are only a small part of the
Russian erotic world of laughter. The Eros of peasants is quite simple,
humour is rude sometimes, but in its rudeness there is much more truth,
sincerity, and fun than in aristocratic refined Eros.
In the XIXth century there was a Department of decency; its duty was to
censor the issued folk pictures, but, in fact, it was concerned with
politics rather than people's morals. Russian erotic caricature existed and
developed along with the traditional caricatures. But "risque" caricatures
were drawn in handwritten journals, during merry-meetings (especially of
officers), in the lines of scripts, and in artists' albums. Among the
numerous caricatures of A. Orlovsky one can find "Fountain made of phalli
with nymphae and tritons"; K. Bryullov's irony is evident in some
mythological drawings for "inner circle"; the artist also drew some
caricatures as well. The flourishing of Russian graphic erotic art happened
in the late XIXth - early XXth centuries (V. Milashevsky, Y. Annenkov, K.
Somov,and some others).
Under the Soviet regime erotic caricatures were created but lay "in the
table"(not published), it was a kind of escape from reality. Although it is
impossible to speak about S. Eisenstein's escape he, like his great
colleague F. Fellini, drew erotic caricatures along with his work at "Bronenosets
(Warship) 'Potyomkin'"
In 1960-1970s some frivolous caricatures began to be published in some
Baltic newspapers and magazines because of special status of those republics
in the Soviet Union, besides the level of artistic graphics was very high.
With the beginning of "perestroika" erotic humour has become the absolute
leader on the pages of numerous newspapers and magazines, especially youth
editions. In 1991 in Chelyabinsk the first exhibition of erotic caricature
was held, it proved that a modern artist who drew such caricatures can not
be immoral. It is fair to say that he/she is like a naughty "jester" who is
allowed to tell the uncovered truth. Any caricaturist helps the spectators
become free from formalities. In 1990s erotic luboks full of irony and
frivolous tricks appeared again. Those are refined works by
A. Nozhkin and N. Mikhailovsky; they are like peculiar "magic and
primitive theatre", where phallus is used not only purposefully but as an
independent folklore character
