Funny Space

In the ancient times people thought that space is very amusing, the philosophers thought quite the opposite and considered space very serious. But it is more interesting to live on the earth which stands on the three elephants that are put on the floating whales. Some Northern nations did not know elephants, and put the Earth on perches and pikes. The others said that the Earth was a huge human body, and navel was the most important part of it. Our forefathers thought of the zodiac signs, and today millions of people trust the horoscopes though many caricaturists try to ridicule them. Kukriniksi make Aquarius the bureaucrat speaker with a watering-can instead of the head. V. Rozantsev invented a new zodiac sign which he called УBureaucraticФ.

Space has always been a remarkable subject for the caricatures. The moon, stars, terrifying comets are very popular images in the humorous magazines.

During the Great Patriotic War the space topic was not so popular but the first sputnik renewed interest in it. Caricaturists animated the moon (N. Dolgorukov, 1959), planets of the solar system. The УKrokodilФ magazine opened a special rubric УEarth Ц space- EarthФ with УspaceФ caricatures by I. Semenov, E. Gorokhov, Y. Fedorov, Y. Cherepanov, and others.

A lot of caricatures were devoted to God ( in the picture by E. Gurov God offers an astronaut to change his helmet to the halo.) Caricatures by D. More showed God in the satirical aspect, J. Effel Ц humorously.

Lately a lot of caricatures are devoted to UFOs and visitors. Russian cosmonauts themselves published a satirical newspaper УNeptuneФ, A. Leonov was the editor of it. Cosmonauts should have sense of humour. In 1992 a collection of caricatures by V. Peskov УCosmonautsТ SmilesФ was published. It proved once again that cosmonauts like to joke and space is a wide subject for caricaturists.
