Hunting and Fishing
For Soviet people hunting and fishing were sacred because the gave the feeling of freedom. Hunters forget about ideology and politics, become closer to nature. That is why everything connected with hunting and fishing is positive.

One of most favourite paintings in the Soviet times was "Hunters resting at the halt" by V. Perov.

First caricatures devoted to hunting are the "luboks", for example, "A hunter kills a bear, and the dogs gnaw it". A lot of "lubok" characters were the fantastic animals- and fish-monsters.

Traditionally hunting was tzars' entertainment, privilege of rich people. In the Soviet times leaders of the Communist Party also enjoyed hunting. There are a lot of western caricatures devoted to hunting. J. Gillray ridiculed hunters who forgot their guns and tried to catch hares with their hats. There are caricatures about fishing by O. Daumier and Karand'Ash. There are erotic cartoons about hunting Ч the dress of a woman-rider pulls up (or she falls down from a horse) and we see a naked woman.

Cruelty of hunting often became a subject of caricatures. In the picture by P. Pottier "Hunter's punishment" we see a trial, a Lion is the Judge, a Fox is the Prosecutor. The hunter is put on fire, and his dog is hanged.

Clever and stupid, successful and unlucky hounds often became the main characters of caricatures and book. (E. Valter. RamzesТs jokes. 1974). During hunting the hounds can find everything Ч a sign "No hunting!", a fallen angel, or an old boot. The hunters love the clever hounds (A. Orlov, A. Shvarts. "After dogs' show. 1968), sometimes even let the dogs sleep in masters' beds.

In the caricatures devoted to fishing we see that it is possible to catch everything in the water Ч your own trousers (I. Semenov), a huge boot ("New-Yorker"), a crocodile, or your own shadow.

Boasting is common Ч miraculous adventures of Baron Munchausen give hunters and fishers no rest. You can boast a lot but you have to bring something home. That is why one fisherman buys fish (H. Bidstrup), another stubbornly sits at lake and covers with a spider's web (Simur).

Hunting and fishing caricatures are very popular in the "Crocodile" magazine Ч Yu. Cherepanov "Mammoth hunting", I. Semenov "Hunters resting at the halt", N. Sichev "Hunting with a pen", E. Vedernikov "Spinningist at home".
