The relationships between a
creator and the muses are sometimes very funny. A lot of caricatures are
devoted to them. The caricaturists themselves have their own muse. They hide
their muse, do not let the others laugh at her. Caricaturists ridicule muses
of writers, painters, and actors. The muses can have fun together, drink
together (caricature by E. Osipov), take completely drunk artist home or
even look suspiciously (V. Karalus).
Sometimes muses cannot inspire the creator, then Pegasus Ц a horse with
wings, the son of Medusa and Poseidon, and a popular caricature character Ц
comes (or flies) and helps.
In the caricatures Pegasus usually flies in the sky with an artist on his
back. In BidstrupТs pictures Pegasus is pneumatic, and moreover, it can
transform into a bicycle. Pegasus can throw anything on the head of an
artist Ц a horse shoe , for example, O. Kallas, 1974. Pegasus is one of the
characters in J. EffelТs УWorld CreationФ. In the pictures by H. Heibus and
I. Semenov УSpring meeting of the young poetsФ we can learn everything about
the artists looking at his\her Pegasus.
Life of Pegasus depends on the man. If a man is a pianist Pegasus eats
hay right from the piano; if a man is a farmer Pegasus works as a
draught-horse. When Pegasus gets old a wicked master can take it to
slaughter-house and get some money to buy a new car (series of caricatures
by E. Vedernikov. УKrokodilФ, 1967).
Pegasus can look like a typing machine. (L. Samoilov. УKrokodilФ, 1970),
like an airplane (S. Tunin).
УSome critics attack not the poets but their musesФ(M. Kuzmin). The
critics advice only annoy the writers. It began in the primitive society
when the artists drew their pictures on the stones, and their muses were the
most beautiful women in the tribes. The reaction to the critics was the
fight.
The conflict of misunderstanding between a poet and a mob is eternal. And
the muses still cannot solve the problem Уwhat is better: to be a muse of an
accountant or a wife of a poet?Ф(M. Kuzmin).
