Oils
A few artists favored oil paint applied with a brush as a drawing medium. While most used it for local color, often together with gouache, Baldassare Castiglione often used a handsome red earth oil paint as a linear medium. During the Baroque, artists resorted more frequently to oil sketches, because they served a useful purpose in deveoping effects of light and color without requiring much precision in detail. Ultimately the distinction between a drawing in oil on paper and an oil sketch on canvas became increasingly vague.
