St. Veronica’s story is closely connected with the Road to Cavalry. Christ’s feet gave way under weight of the Cross. A woman came up to him and wiped his face with cloth. The imprint of Christ’s face remained on the cloth. It was regarded as a true image of him, a vera icon, the phrase from which the saint’s name derives.
