Baroni, Guiseppe
(1670 - 1730)

An early eighteenth century Italian engraver, Guiseppe Baroni worked in both Rome and Venice. Working with such artists as Domenicho Rossetti and Andrea Zucchi, he was a principal engraver for the Grand theatre de la peinture. As well, Baroni engraved plates after Poussin, Batoui and J. B. Piazetta.
Guiseppe Baroni settled permanently in Venice around 1705 and remained there until his death in 1730. One of his most remarkable engravings from this period is the large topographical view, The Grand Regatta of Venice in 1709. Dedicated to the amusement of the Queen of Denmark, the engraving was created shortly after the actual event and provides a great deal of important historical information, including the identification of the prominent palazzos and decorated vessels along the Grand Canal. Each is identified either with letters or numbers to correspond to the table located within the lower margin.
Baroni signed this engraving to the lower right with his Latin appellation, “Ioseph Baronus”. The complete title of the engraving is engraved along the upper margin; Rappresentazione della Regatta Solenne Fatta in Venezia sopra il Canal Grande nel de IIII Marzo M.D.CCCIX. Per Divertimento di sva Maesta il re di Danimarca. A former collector has apparently mounted this impressive engraving into a large portfolio or book as it bears a vertical fold mark down the centre.
