Calmette, Albert (1863-1933)

Bacteriologist, born in Nice, France. A pupil of Pasteur and founder of the Pasteur Institute at Saigon, he was the discoverer of an anti-snakebite serum there. In 1895 he founded the Pasteur Institute at Lille (director, 1895--1919). He is best known for the vaccine BCG (Bacille Calmette--Guérin), for inoculation against tuberculosis, which he jointly developed with Dr Camille Guérin (1872--1961). He was the brother of newspaper editor Gaston Calmette.
