Cunningham, Merce (1919- )

American modern dancer and choreographer, leader of the avant-garde in American dance. Born in Centralia, Washington, Cunningham met avant-garde composer John Cage in a dance class in Seattle, Washington, in 1938, and the two artists formed a long association. From 1939 to 1945 Cunningham was a soloist for the company of American choreographer Martha Graham. In 1953 he established his own company. In his “choreography by chance” technique, selected motions are randomly given a sequence. In 1974 Cunningham began performing what he called events, excerpts from various dances, often performed simultaneously.
