Emin Pasha, Mehmed. Adopted name of Eduard Schnitzer (1849-1892)

German explorer, physician, and linguist. Appointed by British general Charles Gordon chief medical officer and then governor of the Equatorial province of S Sudan, he carried out extensive research in anthropology, botany, zoology, and meteorology. Schnitzer practised medicine in Albania. In 1876 he joined the Egyptian Service, where he was known as Emin Pasha. Isolated by his remote location in Sudan and cut off from the outside world by Arab slave traders, he was 'rescued' by an expedition led by H M Stanley in 1889. He travelled with Stanley as far as Zanzibar but returned to continue his work near Lake Victoria. Three years later he was killed while leading an expedition to the W coast of Africa.
