Limón, José Arcadio (1908-1972)

Mexican-American choreographer and dancer, whose works are among the most powerful in American modern dance. Born in Culiacán, Sinaloa State, he moved to the United States as a child. He studied with American modern dancers Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. In the 1930s he danced with their company in Broadway musicals and in concert choreographies. In the 1940s Limón founded his own modern dance company, enlisting Humphrey as artistic director.
