Lucas, Sarah
(1962 - )
Sarah Lucas's work explores issues of gender - not in an aggressively feminist manner but from a yobbish, tabloid, 'ladette' perspective. She was born in London in 1962 and graduated with Damien Hirst from Goldsmiths in 1988. Her sculptures and installations are crude and approached from a 'bad girl' point of view. Lucas's works have included kebabs, fried eggs, spreads from the centre of tabloid newspapers, melons and cucumbers placed in positions symbolising male and female genitalia - in fact Lucas brought the mattress to the gallery floor before Tracey Emin's 'My Bed' with her entry for Sensation at the Royal Academy in 1995. Her self- portraits are butch and tough: Lucas smokes a cigarette or aggressively gnaws at a banana. Her recent work includes smoking vaginas and loos moulded from urine-coloured resin.
