Morgan, Ann Haven (1882-1966)

US zoologist who promoted the study of ecology and conservation. She particularly studied the zoology of aquatic insects and the comparative physiology of hibernation. Morgan was born in Waterford, Connecticut, and studied at Wellesley College and Cornell University. From 1912 to 1947 she taught at Mount Holyoke College, becoming professor 1918. She spent her summers at a variety of research laboratories, including the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole in Massachusetts, and also worked at the Tropical Research Laboratory of British Guiana (now Guyana). She was a member of the National Committee on Policies in Conservation Education. Her Field Book of Ponds and Streams: An Introduction to the Life of Fresh Water 1930 attracted amateur naturalists as well as providing an authoritative taxonomic guide for professionals.
