Patinir, Joachim
(b ?Dinant or Bouvignes, c. 1480; d Antwerp, before 5 Oct 1524).

South Netherlandish painter. He is considered the first landscape painter in the Netherlands, for he was the first to treat landscape as an independent theme—this at a time when religious subjects virtually dominated the entire art of painting. Although a religious theme is represented in all of his works, his primary interest was clearly in the landscape. He was also the originator of the Weltlandschaft, a panoramic landscape in which a sort of cross-section of the contemporary world is conveyed by means of a profusion of details.
