- Polish-British dancer and teacher,
who exerted a lasting effect on British ballet. Born in Warsaw, she
learned eurhythmics from the technique's Swiss founder, Émile
Jaques-Dalcroze. She taught it to the Ballets Russes company,
thereby influencing the choreography of Russian dancer
Vaslav Nijinsky.
She then studied ballet with Italian teacher
Enrico Cecchetti
and danced briefly with the Ballets Russes. In 1920 she opened an
influential school in London.
