Yinka Shonibare lives and works in London. He was nominated for his series
'Diary of A Victorian Dandy', commissioned by the Institute of International
Visual Arts (inIVA), which was exhibited in advertising spaces on London
Underground. Working with a team of actors and stylists, Shonibare created
various scenes depicting the life of a fictitious 19th century dandy,
played by himself, set in a grand Victorian house in the north of England.
The project develops the artist's ongoing exploration of conventional
representations of Africans living in Britain in terms of class, race
and heritage.
Shonibare has also exhibited widely in group exhibitions at Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, Spacex Gallery, Exeter, Nordic Museum, Stockholm, National Gallery of Canada and Tabernacle Gallery, London. |
