| Virchow, Rudolf Ludwig Carl (1821-1902) |
| German pathologist, the founder of cellular pathology. Virchow was the first to describe leukaemia (cancer of the blood). In his book Die cellulare Pathologie/Cellular Pathology 1858, he proposed that disease is not due to sudden invasions or changes, but to slow processes in which normal cells give rise to abnormal ones. |
