Mosque Lamp: Imitation of Chinese porcelain Turkey - Iznik - 16 century A. D. H. 28.5 cm. Mouth diam. 15.5 cm. Ottoman potters were influenced to some extent by items imported from China. They developed their own style, producing works of their own invention.

The design comprises geometrical and plant elements including lily flow- ers, and carnations. The designs are repetitive and identical drawn over and under the glaze.

 
Jar: Lustre - painted
Egypt - Fatimid period - 11 century A. D.
Height, without the neck, 26 cm.
The body is divided into three areas, each has a design of an animal devouring a rabbit. Each area is separated by a row of plant wreaths. The Fatimd lustre ware, in its monochrome colours ranging from pale lemon yellow to a rich deep copper, is embodied in this jar.

Lustre-painted in copper colour on a cream coloured background with a legendary animal in the middle, resembling a lion raising its tail upwards. The external circle has five big leaves on a background of the simple plant decoration, three circles of interlaced lines frame the animal drawing.

Design of a turbaned prince and foliated plant stems. On the border is a band of floral decoratian in red, yellow, green, black and blue on a white background.

Designs in various colours together with the red colour, decorated with motifs of sail boats and decorated bands drawn over the glaze.

Lustre - painting is one of the major contributions of Muslim potters to the art of ceramics, a technique unknown before. Lustre is an over-glaze technique in which the metalic compound pigment is applied to the glaze-fired hard surface.It is fixed in a second firing in a reducing kiln, and adheres to the surface in a film so transparent and thin that it produces a rainbow reflection.

Blue ornamentation on a white background .The decoration includes fish scales, flowers, a circle with bunches of grapes and vine-leaves .Simple and wavy floral designs, and connected brackets drawn under the transparent glaze.

A design of a running big ox on the whole plate with two plant stems in the lower part. Luster is a highly complex technique which requires much effort. It is a delicate technique as well. Due to the many faults that might occur in the process of production, especially during firing. This phenomenon is emphasized by the highly developed technique in this plate.
