Lycopods, the club and spike mosses, are simple spore producing vascular plants adapted primarily to moist environments. Of the 1000 species that exist today, most are quite small, but their ancestors grew as high as 30 meters and made up a good portion of the Carboniferous forests. These forests lead to the formation of fossils fuels. Fern plants also contributed greatly to these coal formations. Many club mosses are Epiphytes, which are plants that grow on other plants. Club mosses and many other Epiphytes, help create an additional habitat in the canopy layer of the forest. |
