Cycads are seed plants that shared Earth's forests with the dinosaurs during the Triassic and Crestaceous periods. About a 100 species exist today, exclusively in the tropics and subtropics. One species does live in the Florida area. Cycads resemble palms, but are not closely related. They have seperate male and female plants that bear seeds in cones.
