Members of the Ginkgophyta were most numerous during the Jurassic period about 200 million years ago. Most died out by about 65 million years ago and only one living species from this division is alive today, Ginkgo biloba. These trees are considered sacred in Japan and China, and have been used in temple gardens for thousands of years. Such gardens, may have been their savior. Many Ginkgo are used along side streets and sidewalks because they are quite durable and can handle poor soil conditions.
