The molecular formula indicates which elements are present in a molecular compound and how many atoms of each element there are.

Examples

  • Water, H2O, has two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.
  • Sulfuric acid, H2SO4, has two atoms of hydrogen, one sulfur atom and 4 oxygen atoms.
