Permanent dipole forces tend to be somewhat stronger than London dispersion forces, and thus substances with intermolecular dipole forces tend to have higher melting and boiling points than those held together with dispersion forces only. An extreme case of dipole forces exists in ionic solids such as NaCl. Here, the molecule is more or less two ions held together by electrostatic attraction. Ionic solids tend to have very high melting and boiling points. |
