Amukta, Alaska

The Alaska Volcano Observatory received a report of an eruption at Amukta volcano in the Aleutian Islands. A pilot for Alaska Airlines saw an ash cloud rising about 1,000 feet (300 m) above the summit of the volcano on both September 17th and 18th. The plume extended about 10 miles (16 km) to the south before it dissipated. The volcano observatory notes that Amukta is a poorly known, seismically unmonitored, and uninhabited island stratovolcano and that it has erupted at least 5 times since 1760, most recently in 1987.
