Three Japanese soldiers were killed on July 12 after inhaling CO2-rich gas at Hakkoda Volcano in Japan. They were on a routine training mission when they slid into a depression and collapsed.
Hakkoda Volcano is located 12.5 miles (20 km) southeast of Aomori City in Northeastern Japan. It is made up of stratocones and lava domes. The highest peak on Hakkoda is Ootake, which is 5200 ft (1585 m) high. Strong solfataras exist around Ootake. There are no records of eruptions at the Hakkoda.
