July 21, 1999
The Piton de la Fournaise Volcano erupted
on July 19. The eruption took place on the uninhabited eastern slope
of the Island of Reunion. The Volcano last erupted in 1992.
March 12, 1998
Piton de la Fournaise began erupting
on March 9, after five and one half years of dormancy. The eruption
began on a fissure 8000 ft (2450 m) high on the north flank of the volcano.
The eruption then moved northward to lower altitudes. Lava fountains
reached 150 ft (~50 m) into the air. These fountains fed a flow which
moved towards the Indian Ocean. Small scoria cones continued to be built
along fissures on March 10 and reached 100 ft (~30 m) high by March
11.
