- Earthquakes, numbering 450, were recorded
on the south side of the Sakura-Jima Volcano during the past weekend.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency has urged residents to stay alert
due to the increased volcanic activity.
- January 24, 1998
- Sakura-Jima volcano erupted ash over
3000 ft (900 m) high on January 24. Ash from this eruption was moving
to the southeast. At last report, this ash cloud had stretched 6 miles
(10 km) from the volcano.
