Back to Current Volcanic Activity

Stromboli, Italy

Stromboli is one of the Aeolian Islands of Italy. It is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. It has been in nearly continuous eruption for about 2,000 years.

September 8, 1998
Stromboli had another explosive eruption on the evening of September 8. The explosion is believed to have shattered windows at San Bartolo. Vegetation on the slopes of the volcano also caught fire from this activity. This explosion was stronger than the August 23 event.

August 23, 1998
A large explosion from Stromboli was heard throughout the entire island on August 23. A column of ash and lapilli stretched high above the volcano, and bombs fell in many different areas around the volcano. The activity started several fires on the upper slopes of Stromboli. Many physical changes have also occurred on the crater rim due to this activity.
