Yellowstone National Park rests in a
huge caldera. It has been the location of three very large eruptions
in the last two million years. The volume of lava erupted from the Yellowstone
caldera during these events makes the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens
look extremely small. Because of this, Yellowstone is considered to
be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the United States.

- January 9, 1998
- A small earthquake in Yellowstone Park
on January 9 caused new and altered geyser activity. The interval between
eruptions of the Old Faithful Geyser has increased from about 74 minutes
to over 80 minutes. This is the longest interval since records were
first kept in the 1920s. Soon after the quake, Vault Geyser began erupting
for the first time since 1988. It spewed so much water that it cut channels
in the surrounding sediment. Cascade Geyser, which hadn't erupted since
the late 1800's, also began erupting within a few hours of the earthquake.
