Little is known about the unmodified nitrogen cycle in the open ocean. Credible estimates of nitrogen fixation by organisms in the sea vary more than ten-fold, ranging from less than 30 to more than 300 Tg per year. There is some evidence that human alteration of the nitrogen cycle could alter biological processes in the open ocean, but there is no adequate frame of reference against which to evaluate any potential human-driven change in marine nitrogen fixation.
