Semeru, Java, Indonesia



Semeru is a stratovolcano which has erupted 55 times since 1818. The most recent phase of eruptive activity began in 1967. Over 500 people have been killed by this eruption over the last 30 years.

One German tourist was killed and another was injured when they were hit by volcanic debris from Mt. Semeru on Thursday. They had ignored warning signs advising people against nearing the volcano, which has been erupting ash for at least a month.
