In addition to the alpha beta T cell receptor discussed so far, there is a class of T cells which express an alternative clonal receptor composed of the so-called gamma and delta chains (NB do not confuse these with CD3). This type of T cell is relatively rare in humans although at least half of the gut lymphocytes of mice express the gamma delta TCR. This type of TCR undergoes similar rearrangement to the alpha beta TCR and there is a large potential repertoire. Little is known concerning their antigen specificity or function. |
