This essay began by noting how the absence of wheels gave rise, indirectly, to an array of unsteady aerodynamic and hydrodynamic mechanisms that can provide very considerable challenges to the most advanced theoretical developments of the time. At the same time however, it is remarkable how in many instances, once the most important physical mechanisms have been correctly identified, rather uncomplicated models can be applied to great advantage in analysing the problem. This point bodes well for future design efforts and for the radiation of such investigative and analytical approaches to engineering problems of both practical and arcane interest. |
