Compound microscopes are also called high power microscopes.  They are used to look at the tiniest things.  With one, you almost always use a glass microscope slide and observe things like pond water critters, insect parts (wings, legs, stingers), plant parts, blood cells and bacteria.  Most have three lower lenses giving total powers of 40X, 100X and 400X.  More expensive ones also have a fourth lens offering 1000X and some have two eyepiece lenses at the top.
