Corpus luteum

(plural: corpora lutea) [L. corpus - body; L. lutum - as a colour, clay-yellow]. A temporary gland formed from a ruptured Graafian follicle and the surrounding thecal cells after ovulation. If fertilization occurs, the corpus luteum persists and continues to secrete progesterone. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates.
