Diplotene

[Gr. diplo - double; Gr. tainia - ribbon]. The fourth stage of prophase 1 of meiosis, following the pachytene stage, in which there is continued shortening and thickening of the chromosomes. Final gene transcription is completed, after which diakinesis occurs.
