Pachytene

[Gr. pachytes - thickness; Gr. tainia - ribbon]. The third stage in prophase 1 of meiosis in which there is further shortening and thickening of the bivalents. The chromosomes split into chromatids, allowing crossing over to occur and hence the formation of chiasmata. This continues in the following stage of diplotene.
