First Memorial, North Vancouver

The Gardens are located in a forested hillside area of the North Vancouver District.  When we began, the site included a funeral home, a chapel, two small lakes and two traditional cremation walls, one with granite shutters, the other with stainless steel covers.
One of the first areas to receive attention was the forest.  Here, in 1994, crushed granite trails along with AGM's 48 and 72 nich columbaria were located amongst the trees. No trees were removed to accommodate the work.  Since the original installations, AGM's cored monoliths, memorial benches and memorial boulders have been installed.  The preservation of the West Coast forest character has made this a special place for families visiting their loved ones.

Upper Lakes, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Burnaby, BC

In 1996 we were asked to develop a master plan for an area near the main entry of the cemetery. The area contained two small lakes and an on-site built columbarium wall. The mandate was to achieve a density of one urn space per square foot, excluding the area covered by the lakes. This was achieved and we were asked to design and manage the construction of the first phase.  The lakes were kept in their general location and form. After the design and budget was approved we continued as the project managers with Kindred Construction Ltd. as the general contractors.  Brick nich walls, existing product from AGM and a custom columbarium from Carrier Mausoleum Construction were used to complete the garden in early 1999.

First Memorial Saanich, Saanich, BC

In 1996 we accepted the responsibility for the design and construction for the gardens at the First Memorial Funeral Home and Chapel on Vancouver Island.  A master plan showing a density of one niche per a square foot of the site after excluding the parking, funeral home and lake was produced.  Phase one which included both newly designed product and product available from AGM has been completed.  The site includes two gazebo's with memorial railings and a gentle, natural path around the lake which has a number of memorial rock plots located around it. The path separates the waterfall from the main lake and crosses over a bridge at this point. In addition, there is the grand brick niche walls, with a granite cap, that surrounds a sloping path from the higher parking lot level to the lake level. As well, this is also the site of a veterans memorial and flag pole, and a columbarium walk.

Chapel Gardens, Ocean View Cemetery, Burnaby, BC

In 1994 the management of Ocean View asked us to review the opportunities for the development of cremation gardens.  Concepts for the areas were discussed. This site was selected and the concept of the historic church courtyard was pursued. Working with Tom Mercer of AGM we developed several new products and incorporated many of the existing ones available from them.  Excluding the area of the chapel, the courtyard has been developed with a density of one urn space per a square foot of the site. In addition a small fountain, twelve special double depth burial crypts and eight memorial plaques have been incorporated in the design. The chapel has been refurbished and is currently being used again for funeral services.

Imperial Gardens, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Burnaby, BC

In 1997, prior to completion of the Garden of Memories on Vancouver Island, we completed the design of the terraced gardens at Forest Lawn.  The site was considered too steep for traditional burial, and a more imaginative concept was explored.  The gardens were developed from memories of the historic 'Hollywood Cemetery' in Richmond Virginia.  The first phase of  the gardens includes two walk-in mausoleums, six 6 crypt and one 12 crypt mausoleums, a large number of turf-top crypts, seven columbaria with 36 12' x12' niches and seven terraced double-depth crypt gardens to accommodate upright makers.

Fountain Estates, Ocean View Cemetery, Burnaby, BC

Fountain Estates is located in the north east portion of Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby. Fountain Estates is a combination of standard in ground burial and private walled estates, and semi-private bench estates. The estates accommodate between 4 and 12 burials and include a granite bench. Included in this area is a large 8' tall cascading fountain designed by Don Vaughan. Vaughan Landscape Planning and Design managed the entire project from inception to construction. Build-A-Vest was given the construction contract for the Estates, and the project was completed on schedule and on budget, opening in the spring of 1999.
