In the early first millennium B.C., a series of independent states arose
in southwest Arabia which included the kingdoms of Qataban, Saba', and
Hadramaut. These were known to Greece and Rome as they lay on the overland
caravan routes bringing incense and other luxury items from Arabia, India,
and Africa. The stele and the plaque with male head were excavated at the
cemetery of Timna, capital of the ancient city of Qataban. The female head
is thought to come from this site also.
