| Mount Karangetang, Indonesia June 10, 1997 Mount Karangetang has been active since mid-April. On Sunday, June 8, a couple was killed by hot volcanic vapor from the volcano. Another person was burned by the vapor cloud. These vapor clouds can move down the sides of the volcano with little warning. In 1992, six people in a nearby village were killed by the same volcano. June 15, 1997 Almost 400 people were evacuated from the slopes of Mount Karangetang on Sunday, June 15. The burn victim from June 8 did not survive, bringing the total lives taken by the volcano in this event to three. The volcano continues to send these hot clouds, which can reach temperatures of up to 1050 degrees Fahrenheit (600 degrees Celsius), down its slopes. Lava is also still being erupted from the volcano. In 1974, during Karangetang's last major eruption, the entire population of Siau was forced to evacuate the island. |
