July 1, 1998
Activity at Papandayan has been increasing since June 20. A large increase in the number of seismic events has been occurring over this time. This increase in seismic activity was followed by gas emissions with fairly long durations. Gas during these events was released from Emas Crater. Small phreatic explosions ejected mud over fumarolic vents at Papandayan on June 23, throwing gas and mud up to five meters above the crater.
