Back to Current Volcanic Activity

Zacatecas, Mexico (Non-Eruption)

A possible volcanic eruption was reported in an area of Zacatecas, Mexico recently. The ground was smoking from several cracks. These cracks were glowing and very hot inside. It was hot enough inside these cracks to ignite wood. The area was immediately isolated.
Upon further study, scientists determined that microbic activity on abundant organic material underground probably produced methane and this started burning when farmers were burning their fields. (Farmers in the area commonly burn dry grass in their fields to make them more fertile). No volcanic signs such as deformation of the ground, ashes or sulfuric odors were detected.
